How to eliminate credit card debt

Orlando, Florida -- The average American carries $5,100 in credit card debt and many think eliminating that debt is impossible.

Tony Boos of Largo was once in that group as he racked up $7,000 in credit card debt.

Stan Smith of Palm Harbor worried he'd never get out of debt either as he rung up $35,000 in debt using his 16 different credit cards.

But both men discovered they could eliminate their credit card debt and it all started by making a phone call to the non-profit counseling service InCharge Debt Solutions.

Hubert Rivera is the Vice President of Outreach Programs for InCharge Debt Solutions which is based in Orlando. He says there is no fee for calling his agency and he notes many times caller really don't need their help, just a budget.

Rivera says living on a budget is the fastest way to control your spending while working off those credit card bills.

"We just need to re-work their budgets and once we do that, they find out that they have money left over that they didn't know that had," Rivera said.

InCharge Debt Solutions works with customers to consolidate their credit card bills, lower their interest rates and eliminate over the limit fees. The fee for those services is typically $20 a month. Rivera says they also require clients to cut-up their credit cards.

In addition Rivera says people need to understand that eliminating debt won't necessarily be quick. "They didn't take you 10 minutes to get into debt, it will definitely not take you 10 minutes to get out of it," he said.

It took Boos 3 years to pay off his credit cards but he says he now feels great, while Smith is halfway there and says it will only take him another 2 years.

Both men say calling InCharge has changed their lives for the better, among other things eliminating credit card collection calls and helping them to sleep better at night.

"I'm a happy man," Boos recently told 10 News.
